May 29, 2025
OTTER TAIL COUNTY, MINNESOTA โ A heartbreaking accident in western Minnesota has claimed the life of 18-year-old Blake Unger, a recent graduate and homecoming king at New York Mills High School. The young man was killed in a suspected alcohol-related crash late Saturday night, May 24, 2025, just miles from home.
Izak Schermerhorn, 19, a fellow graduate and the driver of the vehicle, has been arrested and is now facing serious criminal charges, including criminal vehicular homicide. Investigators believe alcohol played a significant role in the deadly incident, which has left the small community devastated and demanding answers.
Crash Details
According to officials from the Otter Tail County Sheriffโs Office and the Minnesota State Patrol, the accident happened around 11:45 p.m. Saturday night along Highway 10 near Deer Creek Township. Authorities report that Schermerhorn was driving a 2007 Ford Fusion westbound when the vehicle veered off the road, crashed into a ditch, and rolled several times.
Blake Unger, who was a passenger in the car, was ejected during the rollover. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement confirmed he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Schermerhorn sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Blood tests later revealed his blood alcohol concentration was well above the legal limit. After receiving medical treatment, he was taken into custody.
Charges Against Schermerhorn
On Tuesday, the Otter Tail County Attorneyโs Office formally charged Schermerhorn with criminal vehicular homicide, DWI, underage drinking, and reckless driving. Court records state that both young men had attended a graduation party earlier in the evening where underage drinking occurred.
At his initial court appearance Wednesday, Schermerhorn was visibly emotional. Bail was set at $100,000. His next court date is scheduled for next week.
