Southwood — The Southwood community is coming together in sorrow and solidarity following the tragic death of 5-year-old Missy Mogle, who was found unresponsive in her home last week. As the investigation into her passing continues, heartbroken residents are organizing a candlelight vigil to honor the young girl’s life and send a powerful message: our children must be protected.

The vigil is scheduled for Thursday evening at Southwood Community Park, with neighbors asking people from across the capital city to attend and stand together in remembrance of Missy. Organizers are encouraging participants to bring candles, flowers, stuffed animals, and signs to express their grief and love for the little girl so many now feel connected to.

Ashley Chambers, a local mother helping to lead the event, says she’s been deeply affected by Missy’s death — even though they never met.

“I didn’t know her, but I feel like I am her,” Chambers said. “We all have little girls in this neighborhood. We all want to feel like they’re safe. I just keep thinking, ‘What if it had been my child?’ I wish I could have done something to help her. Now, this vigil is something I can do.”

Missy, remembered by neighbors as a joyful little girl who loved to play outside and smile at strangers, was found unresponsive in her home last week under unclear circumstances. First responders tried to revive her, but she was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Authorities have not yet released details about the cause of death, but an autopsy and investigation are underway.

While answers remain pending, emotions in Southwood are high. There is sadness — and also anger.

“This has shaken all of us,” said Olivia Torres, another resident. “We’re grieving, yes, but we’re also demanding better. We want to know what happened. And we want to make sure it never happens again — not to another child, not in this neighborhood, not anywhere.”

Thursday’s vigil will begin at 6:30 p.m., just before sunset. Organizers have planned a quiet, respectful gathering with a moment of silence, a prayer, and the lighting of candles to celebrate Missy’s memory. Several community leaders, faith figures, and children’s advocates are expected to attend, offering words of comfort and calls to action.

Representatives from local support services will also be present to provide grief counseling and share resources with families who may need help processing the tragedy.

For Chambers and many others, the vigil is a way to begin healing — and to ensure Missy is not forgotten.

“She should have had a long, beautiful life,” Chambers said. “And while we couldn’t save her, we can make sure her light shines on in this community. That’s what this vigil is about — honoring Missy, and protecting every other child in her name.”

The vigil for Missy Mogle will be held Thursday evening at Southwood Community Park. Community members are asked to arrive by 6:30 p.m.
