Travis Pride, 43, Beloved Head Football Coach at Byron Nelson High School, Dies Suddenly
PONDER, TX — Travis Pride, head football coach and campus athletic coordinator at Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club, passed away suddenly this week. He was 43.
Coach Pride’s unexpected death has left a deep void across the school community, where he was known not only for his leadership on the football field but also for his unwavering commitment to students, staff, and families. His passing has shocked and saddened hundreds of current and former athletes, colleagues, and friends across Texas.
Pride began his tenure at Byron Nelson High School in 2022 and quickly became a respected figure for his dedication to building both strong athletes and stronger young men. He brought a passionate, people-first approach to his coaching, often emphasizing accountability, integrity, and character development just as much as performance on the field.
“He didn’t just prepare us for games—he prepared us for life,” said one of his senior players. “Coach Pride was the kind of man who believed in you when you didn’t believe in yourself.”
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Pride served as a campus leader and mentor, supporting students far beyond the locker room. Faculty, staff, and administrators alike describe him as a man of strong values, compassion, and unshakeable work ethic.
Born in Texas, Pride devoted much of his life to youth mentorship and high school athletics. Before joining Byron Nelson, he held various coaching positions where he made lasting impacts on student-athletes and their families throughout the region.
He is survived by his wife and children, who have asked for privacy during this difficult time. Details regarding funeral services and a public memorial will be announced by the family and school district in the coming days.
The Northwest Independent School District released a statement expressing their sorrow, saying in part: “Coach Pride was more than a coach—he was a pillar of our community. His dedication to his students, athletes, and colleagues will not be forgotten.”
Grief counselors are currently available at Byron Nelson High School to support students and staff as they mourn his loss.
Coach Travis Pride will be remembered as a devoted educator, a transformative leader, and a beloved member of the Byron Nelson family whose impact will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
